A few weeks ago I hit up the infamous Brunswick Artist Market. Well known for its low key, friendly and vibrant atmosphere the market has sought out a new location – The Spotted Mallard.
Also a local icon The Spotted Mallard has served as a beloved live music venue and/or place of refuge during the Sydney Road street party. The place is bustling, attracting some killer line ups and is also home to the most stunning Art Deco stained glass windows which are fabulously enhanced by disco balls.
The market
The market serves up some equally as beautiful, elegant and funky arts and crafts. It isn’t huge but it is very brunswick, tucked away up some stairs just off Sydney road and to the untrained eye very unsuspecting. But if you find it you will encounter an array of well priced, up and coming artists who clearly love what they do.
Sounded by comfy couches, vintage lampshades and an excellent Cher poster, the vibe is refreshingly unpretentious and chilled. A selection of local artists grace the stage and provide an amazing soundtrack as you make your way around the hall like room.
Food and drink wise the Co-Ground coffee van is in full force – make sure to bring your reusable coffee cup! And they also offer up a selection of delicious toasties. If you are feeling slightly dusty after Friday night festivities the bar also serves delicious bloody Marys and beers at an appropriate hour.
Hot tip: bring cash
- Gold coin donation needed for entrance (100% proceeds go to the great organisation Co-Ground)
- Cash is always good for markets. More and more stalls now have card facilities but usually some don’t. And you never want to miss a bargain.
- The musicians also sell CDs and you don’t want to miss out on those
Types of Stalls to expect:
- All kinds of prints (weird and wonderful)
- Glittery earrings
- Festival attire
